Synopsis

A leading historian reveals the never-before-told story of a doomed British prison and the massacre of its American prisoners of war After the War of 1812, more than five thousand American sailors were marooned in Dartmoor Prison on a barren English plain; the conflict was over but they had been left to rot by their government. Although they shared a common nationality, the men were divided by race: nearly a thousand were Black, and at the behest of the white prisoners, Dartmoor became the first racially segregated prison in US history. The Hated Cage documents the extraordinary but separate communities these men built within the prison—and the terrible massacre of nine Americans by prison guards that destroyed these worlds. As white people in the United States debated whether they could live alongside African Americans in freedom, could Dartmoor’s Black and white Americans band together in captivity? Drawing on extensive new material, The Hated Cage is a gripping account of this forgotten history.

My Review

This book was brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I also learnt so many fascinating facts about war prisoners and jails. It has always made me wonder what happened to prisoners of war and this book explained everything brilliantly from the country's struggle to house them all and what lead them to building the country's biggest prison. It also talks about the conditions they lived in, the costs of keeping them and the things that happened throughout looking at the stories of many prisoners. It even followed the lives of these prisoners after they left dartmoor. I just loved every minute and I just love learning new things. This book would be perfect for those who love history books as it when through the napoleonic wars. Also those who have a cultural interest in the introduction of black soldiers and there segregation.

So much praise goes out to the author and publishers for bringing us this fantastic history of such an iconic prison and the life and troubles held within its walls.
